Field coverage
Data notes
Coverage counts describe the full tables. Blank cells and empty JSON collections are excluded; zero and false are populated values. Blank cells do not mean zero or no. A populated contact field does not establish that the contact is current or verified.
- Owner rows are relationships by role (owners, directors, officers and managing employees); one person or company can appear many times, and counts are not unique owners.
- Ownership percentages are self-reported to CMS; do not sum direct and indirect interests or assume they total 100%.
- Some enrollment CCNs, ZIP codes and PAC IDs lost leading zeros at the source. They are not padded; a five-digit CCN is linked only when the zero-restored CCN is a hospital in the same state.
- Enrollments also cover rehabilitation, long-term care and other hospitals and units absent from Hospital General Information; hospitals without a linked enrollment, such as federal hospitals, have blank ownership counts.
- Individual owners and managers are named as published by CMS, without personal contact details. A hospital phone is a facility number, not an owner contact; contacts are not reachability-verified.
- Star ratings and measure counts follow CMS reporting periods; "Not Available" means CMS published no value, not zero.
- Current place data are dated separately from the CMS editions; place coordinates are bounding-box minima.
- Cost report values are as published in the CMS public use files, which reflect HCRIS data as of the extract date CMS states; report status and dates come from later HCRIS files and can describe a reprocessed record of the same period (hcris_link_status).
- Cost report fiscal years follow the federal fiscal year in which each reporting period begins, so periods and end dates vary by hospital; most recent means the latest reporting period end date, then the later HCRIS receipt date.
- Cost reports link to hospitals only by identical six-character CCN. Hospitals without a captured report, such as federal hospitals, have blank cost report values; reports for CCNs outside Hospital General Information stay in cost_reports.csv.
- Medicare and Medicaid day shares are computed only from days published in the same report and are not imputed; blank cost report amounts are unknown, not zero.
