CONTENTS
sample.csv: 100 real rows, all 164 columns from carriers.csv.
Repeatable selection; not a statistically representative sample. The legend describes the full product; companion data tables are only in the full download.

FEATURES AND PREPARATION
- Every row of the FMCSA Company Census File, one per USDOT number: active, inactive and pending registrations, with the status code and label on every row.
- Legal and DBA names, physical and mailing addresses with published postal codes plus formatted U.S. ZIP/ZIP+4, and the principal business phone as published plus +1 E.164 for U.S. and Canadian numbers.
- Operating authority docket numbers (MC, MX, FF) with their status codes, entity types (carrier, broker, shipper, freight forwarder, registrant, intermodal equipment provider, cargo tank facility) as labels and true/false flags, and interstate/intrastate operation.
- Power units, trucks, buses, drivers by interstate/intrastate and radius, CDL drivers, owned/term-leased/trip-leased equipment counts, MCS-150 mileage and year, hazardous materials indicator and cargo classifications decoded from the FMCSA data dictionary.
- Latest review type and date, safety rating and date, and recordable crash rate as published.
- Personal-data protections: company representative names, contact cell phones, Dun & Bradstreet numbers and email addresses other than shared business mailboxes are withheld; legal names that appear to be individuals are flagged.
- Current place links by labeled exact-key rules (legal or DBA name, core name, phone, street, building and ZIP), with websites, phones, shared-mailbox emails, place categories, brands, social profiles and per-place attribution; ambiguous candidates stay unlinked.

USING THE FILES
legend.csv defines the columns, units, formats and blank-value meanings.
CSV is UTF-8 with headers. Import identifiers, ZIP codes and phones as text. Blank differs from zero or false.
Columns of type json contain JSON text within CSV cells.
LICENSES.txt contains source attribution and applicable notices.

LIMITATIONS
- FMCSA builds the census daily from a database 24 hours old; its own systems (SAFER, Motus) are authoritative. It excludes shipper-only entities and entities with an active hazardous materials special permit.
- Inactive registrations are included and marked by status; USDOT registration status is not operating-authority or insurance status. Insurance filings and authority histories are separate FMCSA datasets and are not included.
- Names, addresses, phones, fleet, driver and mileage figures are registrant-reported, may be years old (see mcs150_date) and are not verified; 0 and blank are kept as published.
- Many carriers are sole proprietors: legal names, addresses and business phones can be personal. legal_name_may_be_individual is a heuristic flag that can miss trade-style names; publication does not establish consent to marketing.
- Email addresses are delivered only for shared business mailboxes, a small share of published addresses; FMCSA officer names, contact cell phones and D&B numbers are withheld.
- Codes absent from the FMCSA data dictionary (for example fleet size code 0) keep the published code with a blank label.
- Place contacts describe the Overture release, not the census date. Matched does not mean manually verified; U.S. physical addresses only, and carriers operating from a home or terminal address may link to that location or not at all.
- 935 source record(s): U.S. address postal code is not ZIP or ZIP+4 syntax; ZIP left blank
- 23 source record(s): Value below the documented range
